Turn Cold Calling Into Making Friends

Let’s face it… most of you don’t like cold calling!

It sounds so negative and sends chills down the spine of many.

So… Why not just make friends!

How?

It is really simple, you just have to change your mindset and your approach.

Let’s face it, cold calling sounds negative and painful and creates anxiety and fear in some of the best sales people.

But. it doesn’t have to.

In his book “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” Dale Carnegie says, “You have to have a good time meeting people if you want them to have a good time meeting you.”

Such great advice. You have to just relax and have fun. Start a conversation based on what your new friend is interested in. This is as simple as looking around their work space and noticing pictures and plaques of what is important in their lives, and then listening to them.

It should start with the first person you see, often the Director of First Impressions or Receptionist. They hold the key to their organization.

Dale Carnegie, Author of How to Win Friends and Influence People

You need to build that Know, Like, & Trust as quickly as possible.

Often, I will walk in with coffee or chocolate, which is always a good starter and just listen to what is going on in their lives, with no intention of trying to sell them anything that day.

Your approach is so important.

“If you want to be interesting, be interested” - Dale Carnegie

Be authentic. People know if you are being sincere, and if you really care about what they are saying.

This is an important step in true connection.

“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” - John Maxwell

When you really care, people see it.

Have some fun and just have a great conversation, with you doing most of the listening.

“Earn the right to be heard, by listening to others.” - John Maxwell

I have had many situations where people just needed someone to talk to. If they feel like they can trust you and share part of their life, it will build trust and an authentic relationship so much faster.

I always have fun and throw in a #RussSelfie and ask if I can post it on social media as well. Then, they see me after I leave and remember the good conversation we had. Often next time I see them they greet me with a hug and are happy to have me back.

So focus on making friends and the selling will take care of itself.

I have an upcoming workshop if you want to know more about my thoughts on this subject.
