Easily Distracted? Join The Club!

Are you easily distracted?

Do you lose focus and get frustrated?

Well… join the club. There are many of us that have to work hard to intentionally stay on track.

There is no easy answer, just hard work and dedication… choosing to focus your way out of distraction.

It is so easy to drift when you are in a meeting or working on a project, but you can create habits to keep your focus. Pre-plan how you will deal with distractions and times you lose focus.

How?

First of all, take one thing at a time. Multitasking is a myth and it will only make you more distracted and less productive.

“The shorter way to do many things is to only do one thing at a time.” – Mozart

When you focus on one thing at a time, you will accomplish more, faster. This will lead you to a more successful and productive life.

It is easier said than done, but you can develop good habits that will help you in the process, like when your mind starts to wander, make an intentional choice to refocus on the task at hand. Often, writing and taking notes helps the process, or a good work partner that can help you stay on track.

If you know you are easily distracted, make the choice ahead of time, pre-plan and be ready when the distractions come.

Talking too much and getting yourself distracted is another thing many of us deal with.

“Most of what we say and do is not essential…Ask yourself at every moment, ‘Is this necessary?” – Marcus Aurelius

Be accountable for yourself, and check your speech and what you are talking about. Is it accomplishing your task at hand?

I have to watch this constantly. I have developed a habit of diverting my attention and my team back to the topic at hand, and you can too. You just have to plan ahead and be ready when the time comes. Another habit that can help.

“The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.” – Bruce Lee

If you want to be successful, choose to be that warrior with lazer-like focus. It is a skill you have to work on. It is not easy, but it can be done. It is up to you. Practice, practice, practice is the way to successful focus.

It is like shooting free throws in basketball, or putting in golf. You develop a habit. A routine that helps you focus on the task at hand.

“Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory.” Bill Russell

You can concentrate your way to victory, if you practice and choose to be mentally tough. It is not easy, but you can do it.

Don’t let your fear of failure get in the way. Often fears will easily derail you and increase distractions, but you don’t have to let that happen.

“The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire, not things we fear.” – Brian Tracy

Create a habit of focusing on what you desire. What is the outcome you are looking for and what do you need to get there?

Let your passion for your desires lead the way.

This is a superpower you can develop through intentional focus and choice.

“In the age of distraction, single-tasking is a superpower.” – Greg McKeown

So choose single-tasking, not multi-tasking.
